Culture Shocks: Moving to the UAE

Moving to the Middle East can definitely be a culture shock for you. It’s a whole different lifestyle. Not that that’s putting anyone off – so many people are still choosing to move to countries like Qatar and the UAE.

So, in this blog, I’m going to give you a heads-up about the sort of things that might catch you by surprise – that way, you’ll at least have some idea of what you can expect when you arrive!

  • Firstly, it can be quite expensive. When a lot of people think about Dubai they think flashy cars and high-rises – there’s a reason for that! It is a wealthy, extravagant place, but that also means that the general cost of living is pretty high. Make sure to take that into consideration when you’re planning your budget!

  • It’s hot. Like, really hot. The summer months can be kind of stifling, so people often stay inside during the day.

  • Ramadan is a huge event in the Middle East. Practicing Muslims fast during the sunlight hours. Out of respect, you should avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public too.

  • Swearing is taken very seriously, and is very offensive in the UAE. In some cases it’s an arrestable offence – as is making rude hand gestures – so make sure you’re always polite!

  • The UAE is quite a conservative country. Both men and women wear very modest clothing, keeping most of their body covered. As an expat, you’re not expected to wear traditional clothing or hide your hair, but you should still dress modestly to respect the country’s culture.

  • There are daily calls to prayer played over speakers five times a day. If you're not aware of what these are, this can be quite confusing!

  • Like anywhere, you’ll run into your fair share of bad drivers. Be prepared for people not indicating, not using their headlights, speeding... You get it. Be careful, and don’t succumb to their driving habits yourself!

Quite a few of them are a bit negative, I suppose, so here are some positive things to look forward to!

  • The UAE has a Minister of Happiness to help the country reach their goal of becoming one of the top 5 happiest countries in the world!

  • The weather, beaches and scenery are amazing. If you thrive under a blue sky, you’ll be set.

  • There’s a big expat culture across the UAE, so you’ll easily find a community to settle in with. It’s also very culturally diverse.

  • English is widely spoken, so there’s no need to struggle with a language barrier.

  • There's a wide variety of landscapes, like bustling cities with vibrant nightlife, and breathtaking nature from mountains to beaches – and there’s a range of activities everywhere you go. There’s something for everyone!

You’ll settle into your new way of life pretty quickly, so don’t worry.
