Getting a local driver's license in the UAE

In this post I’m going to talk you through how you can get a driver’s license for the UAE. It’s easier than you might think, so don’t worry!

How do I get a driver’s license?

Depending on which country you are from, you may be eligible to directly convert your previous license to a UAE one, without needing to so any driving classes or tests. You can find a list of these countries here. Depending on the Emirate, you may be able to apply online or you may need to visit a Local Service Center. Either way, you’ll need to provide:

  • Original Driving License and copies

  • Emirates ID and copies

  • Eye test report

  • Passport-sized photos

  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) if required

  • Arabic translation of your license if required

Your new license will be issued within a few working days and cost between 600-1000AED, depending on which Emirate you apply from.

If your country isn’t eligible for the license exchange, you’ll need open a ‘traffic file’, take lessons and sit theory and practical tests before you can get your UAE license.

What else do I need to know?

You need to be 18 to drive in the UAE and you need to be 21 to rent a car.

If you’re looking at car rentals, keep in mind that some car rental companies require you to have an International Driving Permit. These are fairly easy to apply for if you have a standard driving license. You’ll need your passport (or a copy), Emirates ID (or a copy), UAE driving license and a passport sized photo.

Don't forget that cars drive on the right side of the road in the UAE.

Hope this helps! If I’ve missed anything important out, let me know below 😄
